User Task Flow

To understand the user, we developed a user specific task of navigating the Reddit application to comment on a "UX Design" thread. Once we had our flow, we began exploring the heuristic evaluations we saw and analyzed them.

Rating

Severity Scale

To access the correct level of severity of each violation, we create this scale for measurement.

Violation 1: Home Screen

Heuristic Violation:  Aesthetic and Minimalist Design

Severity Rating: 2 Low Priority

Problem: It was an overwhelming amount of information, graphics, or elements, leading to a cluttered and visually noisy interface.

Solution: Declutter the home page by focusing on essential content, ensuring a clear hierarchy to prioritize key information.

Image to left is the redesign.

Violation 2: Image Viewer Screen

Heuristic Violation: User Control and Freedom

Severity Rating: 2 Low Priority

Problem: The interface disappears completely and can cause the user to wonder how to leave the page.

Solution: Top and bottom bars remain visible, letting the user tap on the back arrow, upvote or leave a comment.

Violation 3: Thread Screen

Heuristic Violation: Flexibility & Efficiency of Use

Severity Rating: 3 Major

Problem: User must scroll through each thread reply before the thread line indicates a new thread start point.

Solution: Designed a “Collapse” button and each thread and it’s corresponding comments are in a separate frame.

Violation 4: Comment Screen

Heuristic Violation: Recognition Rather than Recall

Severity Rating: 1 Cosmetic

Problem: Requires a user to recognize this icon as a comment icon without a label on every screen.

Solution: Used the app’s existing icon as a reply icon.

Key Learnings

Brand Identity

Is it really that serious?

Brand Identity

While redesigning pages for an existing digital product, we have to follow brand’s existing design vision intention.

Redesign

Is it really that serious?

Brand Identity

We learned how to improve an existing digital product by going through a heuristic evaluation and redesigning certain pages of it.

Is it really that serious?

Is it really that serious?

Is it really that serious?

We learned that certain heuristic violations are not as severe as we first thought. Not all violations are catastrophic.
